Normally friendly rivals on the sand and in the water at surf life saving carnivals, nippers from both clubs relished the chance to test out their skills, learn from each other and have lots of fun.

The idea of a ‘Derby Day’ between the two local clubs initially came about because Port Macquarie nippers haven’t been able to use Flynns Beach recently because of the red weed problem.

Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club committee chairperson Sandra Slattery said they were more than happy to accommodate their neighbours.

“It’s disappointing when the kids can’t do nippers due to beach conditions, so we invited Port Macquarie to join us on a Sunday at Lighthouse Beach," Slattery said.

Once the seed was planted, both clubs also saw it as a great opportunity to get some competitive practice in ahead of the weekend’s 2019 NSW Country Championships at Cudgen Headland.

“We had nippers ranging from under-6s through to under-14s, as well as under-15 cadets competing, and it was great to see the beach packed with the colours of both clubs,” she said.

Port Macquarie SLSC Junior Activities Committee chairperson Danny Suitor agreed.

“It was fantastic getting all the kids together for a bit of friendly competition and to hone their skills ahead of the remaining carnivals for the season,” he said.

“It also gave the respective age managers from each club a chance to work together and get some new ideas for their own nipper group.”

“Given the success of the meet, we look forward to hosting the next ‘Derby Day’ at Flynns Beach.”
