Graeme Brittain from Weatherzone said temperatures will be above average for the foreseeable future.
“For the next few days we are going to be seeing top temperatures 5-6 degrees hotter than average,” Mr Brittain said.
“Heading into the weekend people can expect a top of above 33 degrees. At this stage the coolest day will by Sunday when a low pressure system is expected to come through.
“However that will be short lived and temperatures will then rise again into next week.”
The average rainfall in January is around 160mm and so far this month Port Macquarie has only recorded 0.6mm of rain.
As of January 16, the Port Macquarie Dam water level sat at 75.6 percent while Cowarra Dam is 83.7 percent filled.
Paul Corben director of the North Coast Public Health Unit said it is important that people plan their days around the heat.
“With temperatures rising it is important that people remember to keep cool by drinking lots of water and wear lightweight light coloured clothes,” Mr Corben said.
“If you do need to head outside make sure we wear sunscreen and a hat and only spend as much time as is absolute necessary in the sun.
“If your home has air conditioning or you have fans now is the time to use them to stay cool otherwise head to shopping centres or the library to keep cool.”
He said it is also important to check on elderly family or friends when the temperatures rise.
“The heat is especially hard on elderly people so if you have older neighbours or family members make sure you check in with them to make sure they are okay,” he said.
“During the school holidays kids will want to run and play outside but make sure you let them run around in the cooler parts of the day so they stay safe.
“And never leave children or pets in cars especially in the heat.”
