Port Macquarie-Hastings Council director Jeffery Sharp said maintaining and improving the condition of the council’s road networks was a high priority for the community and for the council.
The council reseals about eight per cent of its 875 kilometre sealed road network each year.
“This work focuses on maintenance to extend the life of a pavement rather than allowing the pavement to deteriorate to a point where a full rehabilitation, which is the most expensive work, is required,” Mr Sharp said.
“Resealing is around one tenth the cost of full reconstruction or asphalt overlays, and when done at the right time, can extend the life of a road by 10 to 15 years and reduce the need for ongoing maintenance.”
From January, the council is continuing this financial year’s program of resurfacing work.
The main routes in the Port Macquarie area in for attention are Matthew Flinders Drive, Emerald Drive, Jonas Absalom Drive and Watonga Street.
North Haven’s St Albans Way and River Street will be resealed, along with Azalea Avenue in Wauchope and a 200 metre-long portion of Burrawan Drive from Weismantle Street.
Residents in areas where resealing will be undertaken have been notified by mail about the timing and nature of the works.
There may be short delays while the stone is being spread over the bitumen and street sweepers will remove loose stones in the weeks after the work.
A range of treatments may be undertaken depending on the traffic volume, road condition and type of surface.
One of these treatments is a two-stage process with a waiting period of between two weeks and four weeks between the treatments.
“As part of its $28.3 million investment in maintaining and upgrading roads, bridges and roadside vegetation in 2018/19, council will continue to undertake a range of other road rehabilitation work in addition to this resurfacing in coming months,” Mr Sharp said.
This includes the completion of the works on Bago Road, between the Pacific Highway and Milligans Road, Beechwood Road in Wauchope and the start of works on Bay and Bellbowrie streets in Port Macquarie.
The council appreciates the patience of residents and road users as it completes the work.
