Under the Southern Stars at Westport Park kicks of at 12.45pm, with Scott Darlow, then hourly swaps to The Getaway Plan, British India, The Superjesus, Eskimo Joe, You Am I, and Hoodoo Gurus.
“These will be amazingly good fun. A lot of the bands we have toured with in the past back to the early 2000s. It is going to be good to hang out with these guys. We’ll all get together and genuinely enjoy the gigs,” says Eskimo Joe lead singer Kav Temperley.
He has been working on his solo project for two or three years, in between Eskimo Joe tours. “We all have our side projects, and for me it was a solo album, but it takes a lot longer than you think.”
The album, All Your Devotion was released in September last year.
For Eskimo Joe – Temperley (lead vocals, bass, keyboard, guitar); Joel Quartermain (backing vocals, guitar, keyboard, drums); Stuart MacLeod (backing vocals, guitar, keyboard), everyone contributes to writing the band’s songs. “Everybody writes, generally I write the bare bones and we all really make it come together.”
And they must be doing something right with six studio albums, three of which debuted at No.1 on the ARIA charts. Black Fingernails, Red Wine held sway for 62 weeks in the Top 50 and Foreign Land, from fourth album Inshalla, earning two APRA Awards in 2010.
The band celebrated its 21st anniversary last year with a national tour featuring, The Sydney, Tasmanian and West Australian Symphony Orchestras. “The symphony concerts were a dream. To hear songs you wrote in your bedroom played by a 75 piece orchestra, it was really hard to wipe the smiles of our faces. The concerts were magical, and its probably the first time the boys were nervous.
Temperley says they try to bring out new Eskimo Joe material every two years. “I would make another solo in a heartbeat, but we’ll see where everyone is at after working pretty hard doing their extra bits. But we’ve got to do it because we love making music together.”
One thing that might interrupt Temperley’s music making is his wedding in April to the subject of his solo album, fiance Beth. He says there will be a lot of muso friends flying in to Perth for the occasion.
Temperley says people should be in a party mood after Australia Day so the Westport Park show should be a really good gig: “as long as people don’t peak too early”.
Tickets for the 18+ only concert are $110.97 from underthesouthernstars.com.au, the Glasshouse and Ticketmaster.
