After a horror 2017/2018 summer lifeguard Blake Polverino said it had been a comparatively “mellow” season so far.
“We had a pretty good December period across the six patrolled beaches in the Hastings,” Mr Polverino said.
“The mellow conditions along with cold water and seaweed kept numbers down on previous years but those who came out followed the signs.
“We have had no major events over the holidays yet and generally people have been pretty good at swimming at patrolled beaches and between the flags.”
In December, Port Macquarie-Hastings lifeguards completed 15 rescues and 1207 preventative actions, three ambulances were called to our beaches and 27 first aid incidents occurred.
With the warm weather here to stay Mr Polverino said people still need to be safe and follow the rules.
“Always remember to swim at patrolled beaches and between the flags,” he said.
“There are six patrolled beaches in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region which are currently being patrolled seven days a week.
“This will continue right through the school holiday period.
“Only swim to the conditions and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to talk to the lifeguards and lifesavers on duty.”
