Nikki Bawden, head of supported learning at the school said the art project was all about teaching students that not everything has to end up in landfill.

“For the art project we will be repurposing black boards – which we can’t use anymore – painting them up in bright colours and then making a design with all the different lids that we collect,” Ms Bawden said.

“The project is all about teaching students about sustainability and showing that we can help the environment through art.

“In a world where we are increasingly saying ‘out with the old and in with the new’ this is a great way to show students that doesn’t have to be the case.

“We will be encouraging students to create a bright and cheerful environment which they can feel conformable in to learn and play.”

Ms Bawden said the project is a great opportunity to use throw away plastic that most people would not even consider recycling.

“When you do recycle most times you can’t recycle the plastic lids so we have put the call out to the local community to donate any kind of lid,” she said.

“From food and face cream lids, right through the lids off baby wipes containers and coffee pods, we are hoping to create a great collage with depth and a range of colours so would love any donations people have.

“When it is finished it will be a sensory wall for the students with special needs as well as a gorgeous art piece.”
