For getting on to 20 years the Council has had a strategy for opening the Lake, a strategy that is clearly failing to meet its own objectives of maintaining an ecological and recreational resource for the community.
Yet it continues to support this strategy and trot it out at the first sign of public criticism as if it encapsulates the wisdom of Solomon.
It is not working, the lake is closing for longer periods, the water depth upstream of Ocean Drive bridge is becoming shallower, the weed beds have disappeared along with the fish and prawns.
Council needs to review its strategic approach to the lake, in particular the opening strategy and its dredging strategy document to include upstream of Ocean Drive bridge.
Failure to act will result in the lake to the west of the bridge becoming little more than a swamp and the lake to the east a land locked puddle.
