Mid North Coast Local Health District general manager mental health and drug and alcohol Alan Pretty encouraged people to remember those in need during what can be a challenging time.
“It can be a time of enjoyment but for some it’s a time of social isolation, loneliness and grief,” he said.
“It’s important to remember to look out for those vulnerable people.
“It’s about awareness and it’s about just asking people how they are doing and having that conversation.”
Mr Pretty said people with a depressive illness of those experiencing severe stress could find the festive season emotionally difficult.
The risk of self-harm and suicide increased in the days following Christmas, he said.
Those in need of assistance or support during the holiday period are encouraged to reach out for help.
People needing assistance can contact the Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511 (24 hours/seven days a week) for mental health assistance; Lifeline on 13 11 14 (24 hours /seven days a week) for crisis support; and beyondblue on 1300 224 636 (24 hours /seven days a week) for information and advice.
In an emergency, people in need of immediate assistance should contact emergency services on triple zero (000).
