The Port Macquarie section of the Naval Association of Australia along with the Port Macquarie Maritime Museum hosted the celebration.
Port Macquarie Naval Association branch president Len Barker said it was important to acknowledge the region’s maritime history.
The White Ensign, a version of the Australian national flag for use by official government naval defence forces, was raised on the mast overlooking Oxley Beach. It is an historic landmark in the region’s maritime history and was used by pilots to guide their vessels safely into shore.
Flagstaff Hill has recently undergone significant renovations by the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.
The Maritime Museum also unveiled its new Navy room.
“We are all very excited to have a dedicated room where Navy memorabilia will be housed and showcased to the community,” Mr Barker said.
“A number of our members are also donating items to the collection including officer uniforms, replica medals and other pieces which are of significance.”
