This system is expected to very gradually weaken and move away over the weekend and is mostly likely to affect inland parts of the Mid North Coast.
The most active period for thunderstorms is expected to be Thursday (December 13) and Friday (December 14), but it is likely that thunderstorms will persist into the weekend in some areas.
During this time, many thunderstorms are expected to bring heavier bursts of rainfall, with the potential for storms to be severe.
Supercell thunderstorms were recorded west of the Mid North Coast on Thursday. Supercells are prolific producers of severe weather, including giant hailstones, torrential rainfall and locally destructive winds.
Some locations across New South Wales may see over 100mm over the course of this event.
Locally, heavy falls are possible over north-east NSW and up to the Queensland border through the weekend.
