YOU often hear that sport can be a team game and that was never more evident than Mid North Coast’s ladder ranking at the state interbranch surf life saving championships at Black Head.

They finished in eighth position as the third-best country club, but it was their consistent performances across the board that gave coach Mel Cockshutt the main reason to smile.
“In the last six years it’s the most amount of points we’ve earned as a team in that time,” she said.
Finn Askew’s win in the swim was one of the few “major” highlights, but Cockshutt said it was arguably more pleasing to have less of those and more “middle of the pack” finishes.
Fleur Sherlock also finished with a third place in the flags and a fifth in the sprint.
“Everyone came in the middle of the pack, so instead of having a lot of firsts, we had a few firsts, but a lot of fourth and fifth-places,” she said.
“It’s more of a consistent effort across the entire branch and proves that we’ve got around 30 kids that are really competitive.
“I was pretty stoked for them to do that than have a few really good wins.”
Cockshutt attributed the strong performances to Richard Broomby’s hard work as coach in running training programs.
“They have daily sessions across all of the clubs and the weekend was a culmination of that consistency,” she said.
“It means the kids want to stay in the surf life saving movement because they’re enjoying it and that’s important especially for teenagers.”
“We value people being competitive, but we also value people who train and do things well; there’s an evenness across all of the clubs.
“We finished eighth which is our equal-best result over the last 12 years; it’s only the third time we’ve achieved it.”
Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club member Finn Askew is believed to be a “very good chance” of being selected in the NSW state side which will be announced in coming weeks.
