The Port Macquarie section of the Naval Association of Australia along with the Port Macquarie Maritime Museum are organising a morning of remembrance and celebration said local Naval Association branch president Len Barker.
“December 15 marks the 25th anniversary of the decommissioning of HMAS Nirimba and we will be holding a ceremony and barbecue at Flagstaff Hill on the day,” he said.
“It is about remembering the past and we will be re-raising a flag during the ceremony. We want to keep things as simple as possible while still acknowledging the significance of the date.”
The flag raising will be held at at 10.30am at Flagstaff Hill which has recently undergone significant renovations by the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.
Mr Barker said on the day there will also be the unveiling of the Navy room at the Maritime Museum.
“It will be a special day for us as it is also the official opening of the Navy room at the museum across the road from Flagstaff Hill,” he said.
“We are inviting members of the public to come along to the flag raising and then pop along over the road for the room opening.
“We are all very excited to have a dedicated room where Navy memorabilia will be housed and showcased to the community.
“A number of our members are also donating items to the collection including officer uniforms, replica medals and other pieces which are of significance.
“Everyone is invited so come on down.”
