It was a pleasure to give two Port Macquarie community groups Christmas presents this week totalling over $25,000, courtesy of the Commonwealth’s Stronger Communities Program.

Port Macquarie Community College, which does great work with young people needing encouragement to improve their commitment to life-long learning, will receive $20,000 towards improving facilities in its MakerSpace recording facility.
The Port Macquarie Tourism Association’s Christmas present is $6640 to install a free telescope on the headland at Gaol Point for locals and tourists. It’s another brick-in-the-wall of the steady support for improvements to infrastructure along that stretch of our coastline.
A key intent for the telescope is to give people an even closer look than they might otherwise get, even from binoculars, at whales during their annual migration just off our coast from May to October. It will be in place well in time for the 2019 autumn migration northwards to warmer waters.
The Stronger Communities Program has been a great supporter of Port Macquarie in 2018, as it has been of communities right across the country. It funds small capital works projects being undertaken by community groups that make a real contribution to lifestyle and amenity, and it has been a real pleasure, in my final full year as Member for Cowper, to have the opportunity to deliver so much good news to successful applicants.
