In the early hours of Tuesday, December 4, Fred Hynes’ Port Macquarie home was broken into and the club’s flag set given to them at the club’s charter 21 years ago were stolen.
“It is incredibly baffling to everyone in the club that the only thing stolen from my house that night was the flag set,” Mr Hynes said.
“My street is quite close-knit so it was actually my neighbour who reported the crime because she was coming home from work in the early morning and saw a strange figure walking near the house.
“When we came out the next morning nothing looked out of place and it was only because the police got in touch to say my neighbour had reported a figure sneaking around our house that we went back and had a look.
“The burglar overlooked all my power tools and bikes in the shed and instead took the flag set which was in a big, black case.”
The flag set in its case is around 1 metre long and Mr Hynes said he can’t imagine why someone would take it.
“Other than to people in the Lions community, the flags are not at all valuable so we can’t understand why that was the only thing taken,” he said.
“It is all very strange.
“My neighbour said she described the person as having a black coat on and used a torch to see what was in the garage.
“We would just really like the flags to be returned to us as they are very special to us and represent our proud history.”
Anyone with information in relation to the stolen flags are asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or contact the Port Macquarie Police Station on 6583 1099.
