A CONTINGENT of Rural Fire Service volunteers from the Mid Coast District have returned home safely after joining a united effort to battle the recent Queensland bushfires.
Crews in two shifts joined 11 NSW RFS fire trucks from the Mid North Coast, Lower Hunter and Central Coast fire districts.
Volunteers were from RFS brigades from King Creek, Wauchope, Lake Cathie, Green Point and Gloucester.
Earlier this week, more than 70 fires were still burning across the state before severe storms swept through and assisted the fire-fighting effort.
State Fire Commissioner Katarina Carroll says their focus is still on fighting the active fires, but they are also starting to count the cost of the blazes in many areas.
