“I come up two or three times a year to Port. It’s such a beautiful spot, and this event is so much fun. Everyone’s there for the right reasons. Bring everything that glows along and be ready for Christmas classics, modern ones, some ‘80s favourites and join in the family mosh pit up the front,” the 43-year-old says.
Campbell admits the songbook of the ‘80s is his “music bible”. “I fell for it hook line and sinker growing up.” It was only natural he should cut an album called Electrifying ‘80s. “I rejigged the songs, made them more electronic and fun. You know ‘70s and ‘80s music always fills the dance floor.”
Joining Campbell on the bill are students from Port Macquarie Performing Arts, Telegraph Point and Westport public schools, and Hastings Secondary College Westport Campus. The Hastings District Highland Pipe Band and Port Macquarie-Hastings Municipal Band will also chime in.
Twenty-year-old Angus Gill – 2018 Male Rising Star at the Independent Country Music Awards, and 15-year-old Riley Paige – twice a featured performer at Schools Spectacular, will also step up on Sunday night. Campbell is impressed with their credentials.
“Sounds like they are on the right path.” His advice to the young stars is to “trust your own instincts” and “be your own manager”. “Love what you do, get up and have a great time. Keep going and trust yourself. It’s very competitive, and always changing, keep the basis of what it is, it’s about the music.”
One of his favourite career jobs was performing in Shout! He says he enjoyed his time on Home and Away, but it was hard work. “You are lucky if you get two takes, so you really have to be on your game." He is also proud of his work opposite friend Gyton Grantley in House Husbands. His ambition is to play a bad guy, but says “I think I’m too vanilla”.
Campbell loves Christmas time. It will be his 10th year performing at Carols by Candlelight in Melbourne, having grown up watching it on tv. “Everyone gets together to catch up with friends, and loved ones. It’s time to wind down, celebrate, eat and drink too much, chuck out the angry and chill.
Bring your blanket and $2 for collection by volunteers from Flamin’ Dragons, Westport Women’s Bowling Club and The Salvation Army, toward the Salvo’s Christmas Hamper Appeal. There will be fun for the kids, food trucks and the Marine Rescue NSW barbecue and of course the spectacular fireworks from 9pm.
