For year 10 students at Heritage Christian School, those common, everyday lessons in life have been compacted into a week of learning.
The Festival of Reality includes a series of guest speakers who talk with students about a range of issues.
It included a trip to the supermarket with a set budget where students had to plan a meal for seven. They also had to cook the meal which was taste-tested.
The brainchild of teacher Luke Taylor, The Festival of Reality will be part of the year 10 schedule in 2019.
"It is overwhelming that this is needed in our schooling," Mr Taylor said.
"We have a crowded curriculum but there is a very real need for these lessons in life skills.
"It is very much hands-on too.
"The students actually got to change the wheel on a car while learning about the safety aspects too.

"We also got them to do a safety check throughout the vehicle," he said.
Part of The Festival of Reality saw students fill out a cost of living budget which they can then compare with their lifestyle expectations and their prospective employment.
Mr Taylor said year 10 was a transitional year for many students with some looking to find employment while others were investigating their vocational options.
He said the students had been involved in getting the course concept into reality.
"The students realised there was a need for them to learn some of the basic, real life skills," he said.
One year 10 students James Bousamra said he was enjoying getting some hands-on lessons.
"I haven learnt a lot about car maintenance while the discussion about how tax works was pretty enlightening too," he said.
"I think this has been rewarding and by the end of the week I will grow as a person."
Mr Taylor said many families had to contend with time pressures and students often missed the opportunities to learn basic life skills.
Part of the seven program includes students undertaking mock interviews while there is a section on how to party safe.
