The proposed Orbital Road in Port Macquarie is a very important project for our community as we continue to grow and experience traffic congestion in areas such as Ocean Drive, Lake Road and the Oxley Highway. Council has begun community engagement on the proposed Orbital Road, speaking directly with those homes and businesses that fall within the road’s investigation corridor. It is important to know because a property is within the investigation corridor, it does not mean the property is to be acquired in the future.

This is the first step in a long process, and we’re committed to making the best possible decisions based on the interests and concerns of our community. Council staff have knocked on doors and distributed information packs to about 470 homes and businesses within the investigation corridor. These property owners can meet directly with council staff to ask questions on what an Orbital Road may mean for them.
The project is currently not funded, and the likely time frame for the road’s construction is unknown at this stage. Council want to hear the community’s views on the proposed Orbital Road before determining the final route. We will broaden our community engagement activities after the holiday period in early 2019. A comprehensive environmental impact assessment and a number of other technical investigations will also need to take place in conjunction with community engagement, to inform council’s final decision on the route for the proposed Orbital Road.
There will be impacts, however these will be far greater for our whole community and its future if we do nothing about reducing bottlenecks on our busy arterial roads to relieve congestion, or explore ways to better connect our growing communities. Information on further community engagement will be provided in early 2019. A fact sheet with answers to common questions is regularly updated and available at haveyoursay.pmhc.nsw.gov.au/orbital-road.
