They made the final of the World Surf Life Saving Championships in Adelaide before they missed the start.
It ultimately gave them too much work to do.
Monaghan was still satisfied with their overall result – their first on the world stage – and knows the young crew will be better for it.
“Our first two races were perfect and we were right on the pace, but then the final wasn’t our best race,” he said.
“We missed the start and there are no mugs in the final so panic probably set in, but the only way you get better is through experience.”
In flat conditions, Dicky Beach Surf Life Saving Club from the Sunshine Coast proved too good for Wauchope-Bonny Hills, Mollymook, St Kilda and Somerton surf clubs.
“Dicky Beach from the Sunshine Coast were just an amazing crew; they were really good and won the under-23 division too,” Monaghan said.
“Woolgoolga went really well so we’ll hang around them a bit more and see what they do.”
Monaghan said it was a good learning curve for the Wauchope-Bonny Hills crew, but it would help them prepare for the next round of the North Coast Surfboat Series this weekend.
“The girls learned about the process and the management on the day when you race,” he said.
“We just unfortunately saved our worst race for last.”
The club sent 10 competitors to Adelaide with all of them achieving finals results in their events.
Elaine Walker, Gayl Ellis and Deb Bartlett were the only members who achieved podium results, winning bronze in the ladies surf ski relay.
