The  Australian College of Nursing’s NurseStrong movement encourages nurses to improve their physical, mental and emotional strength in a safe and supportive environment.

Port Macquarie Base Hospital clinical nurse specialist Johanna Alaban outlined the program’s benefits from health to team building.

“It’s about taking a little bit of time every week to focus on your own health as a nurse,” she said.

The participants devote about 10 to 15 minutes during their lunch breaks at least once a week to exercise with activities from walking to yoga and strength exercises.

Prizes donated from businesses are up for grabs.

Mrs Alaban said taking part in the NurseStrong campaign also led to team building and the nurses were more productive after a little bit of exercise.

The nurses have invited all staff to join them during the 12-week program which they hope to extend beyond December 23.

“I think the general public appreciates nurses and they want to see their nurses happy, smiling and enjoying their workplace,” Mrs Alaban said.

“The more we can do to provide that to the public, the better.”
