The Scavenge is a waterway clean-up and clothes swap event where litter collected becomes currency to purchase quality pre-loved clothes, books and bric-a-brac donated by the local community.
For every 10 pieces of litter collected participants are rewarded with a token to use in the pop-up sea-side market and as entry into workshops run by Frugal Arts. Every 20 pieces of litter will earn participants a hard earned drink from The Black Duck.
Last year the event was a raging success with so much support from the community.
People will sort and catalogue data for the Australian Marine Debris Database before exploring informative stalls hosted by the local community including Coastal Warriors, Boomerang Bags, Frugal Arts, Kate Caters and the Climate Council.
Local musicians will keep participants entertained with funky tunes, while local businesses, including Port Macquarie Surf School, Bills Fishhouse and Bar and Seas Acres Rainforest Centre have donated prizes for those who collect the most litter and scavenge the furthest.
Scavenge Port Macquarie Local Leader, Karen Fulton, said the group are very excited to hold the event.
“We are thrilled to be joining forces with an array of community groups to bring awareness to how we all can make a difference when it comes to plastic pollution,” she said.
“At last year’s Town Beach Seaside Scavenge over 246 kilograms of litter was collected by 160 people in four hours.”
People can register as an individual or a team.
“You can also find out which local cafes and restaurants have taken the Scavenge plastic-free pledge to remove plastic straws from their businesses and offer discounts on BYO cups,” she said.
“It is estimated Australians use 2.9 billion plastic straws every year. Some of our local businesses are helping to reduce that.”
Registration for the Port Macquarie Seaside Scavenge will begin from 9am at Town Beach in front of the main car park.
The event is organised by Seaside Scavenge which is a not-for-profit organisation who have been cleaning up waterways since 2015.
