The group is tasked with providing first hand knowledge and experience to local headspace workers so they can provide current and up to date help to those who need it most.
With the group for the last three years, Emma Bleasdale said she first learnt about the group in PE at school.
“We had someone in headspace come and talk to my class and since then I knew I wanted to do something to help them help young people,” Emma said.
“I went on the website and signed up and it has been a great few years.
“I have loved going to all the different events and I think it has really made a difference to young people in the community.”
Tamara Ladmore and Joey Hammerton were also members of the 2018 group and said it has been hugely beneficial for them as well as local community.
“I have been on the group for this year and I think it has been a great way to give back after using the services as well an opportunity for me to learn,” Joey said.
“Having only moved to town a few years ago it was a great way to meet people and feel connected to Port Macquarie.
“The group allowed me to have a voice and felt like I was contributing to the community where I live.”
“I moved to Port Macquarie for university and was accessing headspace services,” Tamara said.
“After a while I saw how much they were helping me and was recommending it to my friends and so I asked if I could volunteer and that is how I got involved with the group.
“We get to do some really cool stuff and talk about breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health which I think is important.”
Jules Jamieson youth engagment officer at headspace said the group provided for members to increase their skills while also helping their peers.
“There are so many options for members of the group to do personal and professional development as well as giving back to their community,” Ms Jamieson said.
“They also have the chance to take on a role organising in our events and provide feedback on programs and ideas we have.”
Ashlee Kirkman, Isobella Bennett, and Emma Cleasdale are also members of the group who said it was a valuable experience being involved with the group.
“I got involved through TAFE and I thought it was a great chance to help others,” Ashlee said.
“I have really enjoyed being involved with the events side and getting to talk to people about mental health has been really fun.”
“Me joining the group came through me learning about mental health at the Luminosity Youth Summit a few years ago and from that I decided I wanted to make a difference in the community,” Isobella said.
“It has been so much fun talking to people and I think as a group being able to go to events and show that talking about mental health is okay hopefully that has helped others.”
