Service NSW Port Macquarie, which is behind the initiative, has put out a call for donations of non-perishable Christmas food.
The food hampers will be distributed through the Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre to disadvantaged families.
Service NSW Port Macquarie and Wauchope manager Peter Dawson said the Christmas food hamper drive was an effort on their behalf to support the community and the Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre.
Mr Dawson said they were calling on the community to donate non-perishable Christmas food.
Examples of suitable food items include confectionery, biscuits, nuts, chips and dried fruits, long life juice, canned items, bottled sauces and pasta.
Donations of food can be dropped off to Service NSW Port Macquarie, at the corner of Central Road and Barton Crescent, until December 12.
People with donations should ask for Service NSW Port Macquarie’s Ellen Crepaz.
Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre coordinator Julie Trowbridge said the support was so much appreciated.
“We couldn’t offer what we do without the support of organisations like this,” she said.
“Christmas is especially hard on families that we see.”
Mrs Trowbridge said the families struggled throughout the year to meet their weekly budgets and there were all the added extras at Christmas.
