The much loved Port Macquarie-Hastings School of Hard Knocks Absolutely Everybody choir is inviting the public to their annual Christmas concert on December 2.
The now annual event will be held at the Port Macquarie Uniting Church from 2pm and the choir’s artistic director Tim Maddren said it will be a great afternoon out.
“I was asked to join the choir a few months ago and already I can tell there is something very special in the air here,” Mr Maddren said.
“We are all very different but everyone who comes has a unique talent and I try to bring that out in each rehearsal we have.
“Our Christmas concert will be us doing what we do best and sharing that with the public.”
The choir is a fully inclusive space and is about people similar experiences, similar privilege, singing or speaking with one voice.
“For our choir members, coming to rehearsals might be the highlight of their week but I know it is also the highlight of my week,” he said.
“Everyone has a talent and that is demonstrated in our choir. We have lots of people doing solos as well as other different things so that we can incorporate everyone.
“The Christmas concert is also our end of year concert so we will have some Christmas songs but we will also be highlighting the uniqueness of our choir which will be very special.”
Tickets to the Christmas concert are $10 and will be available at the door.
The School of Hard Knocks - Absolutely Everybody Choir is run by the Port Macquarie Community College to everyone in the Port Macquarie-Hastings community as an inclusive learning program which provides coordination services as well as professional musical staff.
Lyn Schrader coordinates the choir activities on behalf of the community college and helps to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Volunteers fulfil a number of important roles within the choir including member support; transport of members to and from rehearsals or to performances; and assistance in the kitchen with the preparation of a shared meal after each rehearsal.
If you or someone you know is living with a challenge including disability, homelessness, mental ill-health or social isolation, for example, please visit rehearsals on Tuesday mornings at the Hollingworth Street Conservatorium of Music from 10am to 11.30am followed by lunch.
