That’s the main message to come out of the Mid North Coast Zone Championships at Wauchope after Port Macquarie’s senior boys relay team again set the pace.
Twelve months after setting a record, the 4x100-metre relay team of Cooper West, Liam Jones, Jordan Thompson and Jaidyn Rossiter improved on that.
They did so by more than a second as they cruised home in 50.14 seconds.
Port Macquarie Little Athletics Club head coach Gavin Thompson said the prospects of them going even further at the regional titles at Glendale in February looked good.
“The prospect looks great for them having state title success again,” he said.
In a scary thought for their regional title opponents, Thompson believes they can be ever quicker again.
“I think they’ll have better times at Glendale because it’s on a tartan track which is better than grass,” he said.
“I’d love to have a chat with council about getting one of our own in the area, but at the moment we deal with what we’ve got.”
Thompson said before the event that he was most nervous before any relay event and it was no different at the weekend.
“Until you see that final baton change it’s the most nervous I’ve been,” he said.
Their senior boys relay success backed up their junior boys and senior and junior girls relay wins as Port Macquarie set the pace as one of the best-performing clubs of the weekend.
“We did phenomenally well as a club in that we were in the placings in almost every event,” Thompson said.
“I don’t place any expectations on the kids because they set their own expectations, but they exceeded those.
“We can train them as much as we went, but they’re the ones that are running and if it isn’t fun, they won’t enjoy it.”
Thompson was also impressed with the performance of their junior teams.
“I was really impressed with our under-7s because they feel like a million dollars with all their medals wrapped around their necks,” he said.
“That’s it as far as they’re concerned as they don’t go to regional titles.”
