As a paramedic James O’Brien has seen some horrific things and as a result is a strong advocate for stamping out domestic and family violence.

A well known face in the community, James was the first responder to the high profile domestic violence case involving former Port Macquarie obstetrician Dr Angela Jay, and said since then he has been an advocate for awareness around family and domestic violence.
“I think thankfully we are seeing it more and more and I only say thankfully because it means the messages about speaking out and seeking help are reaching people,” James said.
“As a paramedic we do not have as much ongoing contact as say the police do in domestic violence cases but we are usually the first ones on the scene when we get a call.
“And for us we see everything from a bruise to broken bones or worse.”
James said while his role looks after people and their physical injuries the mental damage takes a lot longer to fix.
“In the long run we only have contact with people experiencing domestic violence for a short time,” he said.
“From when we initially get there to getting them to the hospital it is usually a very short time but sometimes that is all it takes.
“For some people being able to talk to a total stranger can be the catalyst for them deciding things need to change.”
“Domestic violence awareness campaigns are so important as it shows those living with violence that there is help out there and people who want to help,” he said.
“The Coastal Walk is so great because our coastline is stunning but walking in solidarity is incredibly powerful as well.
“We need to work as a community to stop family and domestic violence.”
The walk will take place on November 25 from Lighthouse Beach to Westport Park.
Walkers are encouraged in start at either Lighthouse Beach at 8am, Flynns Beach at 9am or Town Green at 9.30am before a barbecue at Westport Park afterwards.
