The first opportunity at seeing who can perform at a competitive level will be at Wauchope on Saturday and Sunday at the Mid North Coast Zone Championships.
It will double as a qualification for the regional titles to be held at Glendale on February 3 and 4.
“Right across the board I’m really excited about the season ahead,” Thompson said.
“The quality of training the kids have put in, even our relay teams I expect to do well.”
Thompson will hope to take an extra couple of relay teams to the state titles early next year after the club’s senior boys 4x100-metre team progressed last year.
“I’ve got high hopes for a couple of our relay teams right across the board,” he said.
“The relays are the last event of the weekend, but are also the most stressful.
“Once the final person gets the baton and then takes off I know I can relax.”
The Port Macquarie club has around 180 club members with 70 expected to head west this weekend.
They will be represented in age groups from the under-7s right up to the under-17 division.
“There are probably about 20 or 30 kids who I think could go well, but we’ll get a good indication after the weekend,” Thompson said.
Port Macquarie will be joined by other clubs from Wauchope, Taree, Stuart’s Point and Kempsey.
