The Port Macquarie school defeated St Dominics of Penrith in the final on Tuesday, capping off a campaign that saw them progress through undefeated.
By the end of the tournament they had registered a perfect six wins from six matches including a 56-50 win in the 9/10 boys decider.
The six-point victory over the defending champions was a pleasing result as they were aiming for their third-straight title.
“They had won the 9/10 boys division the last two years,” Adams said.
Coach Ryan Adams said the last time the school had any success at CCC level was when their open boys team – featuring players such as Beau Montgomery – won their division in 2006.
“We’ve never won the 9/10 boys division,” Adams said.
MacKillop qualified for the trip to Sydney after they became champions of the Lismore diocese in August.
“I was confident we would do well, but the semi-finals were the goal,” the coach said.
A victory over St Therry Rosemeadow in the quarter-finals provided Adams with the belief his team could potentially win the competition.
“We came out of the blocks really quickly and led by 15 points at one stage,” Adams said.
“So when we won that, I thought we were a good chance of going deep in the tournament.”
Adams and the team have now set their sights on the national titles in Melbourne from December 2-7 as the next chance to test themselves against the best.
“We have been drawn in the top division there, so we’ll see how we go,” he said.
