More than 130 lady golfers took to the fairways of Port Macquarie Golf Club this week determined to better last year’s impressive $2000 donation to the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute. And better it they did, raising a remarkable $3500.
The proceeds from the day were presented, in front of a full house, to the cancer unit’s Breast Cancer Nurse Specialist Joanne Woodlands, with every single dollar to be used in support of local breast cancer patients.
Club president Wendy Gordon said the golfers were thrilled to be able to show their support in such a practical way, while having a lot of fun.
“We had a perfect day,” Mrs Gordon said.
“Everyone enjoyed themselves while doing something wonderful for breast cancer patients. There were plenty of raffle prizes, competition prizes and big smiles.
“Our committee members worked very hard to ensure this year’s event was a success, not only in fundraising terms but also as a memorable social get-together.
“We had plenty of community and business support as well, especially from our major sponsor, KFC Port Macquarie and Port Macquarie Service Centre. Their involvement through owner Fran Scutts meant we were able to almost double last year’s donation.”
Breast Cancer Nurse Specialist Joanne Woodlands thanked the ‘pink army’ for their support, and used the occasion to encourage women over the age of 50 to have a breast screen every two years.
“One in eight women in our community will be diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85,” Ms Woodlands said.
“We really want you to talk about regular screening with your friends and family because early detection improves survival rates to almost 100 per cent.
“The Mid North Coast Cancer Institute team and our breast cancer patients are so very grateful for the support and hard work of the Port Macquarie Women’s Golf Club,” Ms Woodlands said.
