They went through the competition undefeated, but a 3-all draw in the final meant they were awarded as joint winners alongside Sydney East Hockey Association.
Coach Jarrod Smith was pleased with the effort from his team who were runners-up in division three last year.
“Indoor hockey can change rapidly because it’s a small court and a really fast ball so penalty corners are really deadly,” he said.
Senior players Taj McIntosh and Bayden Smith led the way as Port Macquarie-Hastings won three pool games.
They couldn’t be separated with SEHA in their two matches in the tournament with both teams playing two competitive draws.
“We had a couple of our younger players as well who acquitted themselves really well all weekend,” Smith said.
Port Macquarie are now expected to progress into division one next year and Smith was already looking at ways his team can improve.
“In indoor you can get left behind pretty quick if you don’t adapt,” he said.
“We probably need to be a little more aggressive and physically stronger because the game is played at a faster rate (in division one).”
The result wasn’t a surprise to the coach, but he was impressed with the effort of goalkeeper Jamie Ferguson.
“He had a really good tournament for us and got better the more games we played,” Smith said.
As a result of their strong performances at Orange, duo Bayden Smith and Teleah Walker have been named in the state indoor team for the national titles in Goulburn from January 4-7.
