But they almost bowed out at the quarter-final stage with Toby Harper’s last-minute long-range jump shot getting them out of trouble against Mosman.
St Peter’s leader of sport and physical education Jeff Arkinstall said the team played wonderfully well throughout the challenge.
“The boys were challenged on many occasions, but through their persistence, resilience and team work, were able to find a way to win,” he said.
“A huge thank you must go to the boys parents for the huge sacrifice they made and to the Port Macquarie Basketball Association for all their help.”
The challenge this year saw 56 teams compete in the year five and six boys divisions.
During the three pool games, St Peter's won three from three and amazingly scored 100 points in 30 minutes during one of the games.
At the end of the pool games, they finished second in division one and advanced to the knockout section to decide the best Catholic primary school basketball team in NSW.
In the semi finals, they played against a very skillful St Patrick's from Albury and won comfortably through their manic pressure on the ball carrier.
In the grand final against St Christopher's, the game swung back and forth until the final five minutes of the game.
That was where St Peter's took control of the game and were crowned the best Catholic Primary School basketball team in NSW.
Adding to the NSWCPS Basketball Champions crown, St Peter's were the NSWCPS rugby champions, made the top 16 at All Schools rugby league and finished the Lismore Diocesan soccer competition as champions.
They also had 19 Polding representatives compete against the best athletes in the state and won for the third year in a row at Zone Athletics and Zone Cross Country.
They also had the most Polding members of any Lismore Diocesan school for 2018.
