The Port Macquarie Hastings Sustainability Network is a connection of individuals, businesses and organisations from the area who are passionate about improving the social, environmental and financial sustainability of our region. 

The Network will be hosting a two day showcase on March 1-2, 2019 at the Port Macquarie Racecourse which will aim to showcase the region’s best individuals and businesses who are using sustainable practices. 

The program will feature guest speakers, practical workshops, seminars and other events during the two days with people expected to from from north of Kempsey and south of Taree for the event.

Nigel Urwin a senior lecturer at Charles Sturt University in Port Macquarie and a member of network said the event is shaping up to be excellent.

“Sustainability is becoming such an important part of our lives, and looking into the future even more so,” Mr Urwin said.

“Whether that be through recycling, food and agriculture or waste management, clean energy, tourism, transport or ethical investment, there are so many different ways people can operate in sustainable ways.

“The Showcase is a really an opportunity for like-minded people to come together and share ideas and see what other people are doing in this space.”

There will be trade displays and food stalls and the showcase on the Friday including opportunities for local schools and other educational organisations and businesses while Saturday will have a more general focus for the community.

Entry to the event will be by gold coin donation.

Maria Doherty, a director with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and also a member of the network said the group are also looking for stall holders and businesses to showcase at the event.

“This is a community lead idea that is being sponsored by Charles Sturt University and the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council but we are looking for other sponsors and stall holders to come on board,” Ms Doherty said.

“We are keen to make this as community focused as we can and the network, made up of passionate people, are the driving force behind the showcase.

“We are asking members of the community who are doing great things in the sustainability space to get in touch with us as we are wanting to hear from a diverse range of people.”

She said the hype is building for the event and watch out in the coming months for more information.

“It is all about celebrating the successes of the community, seeing what is out there, fostering a passion for the environment and seeing what else can be done to be more sustainable.

“This will be a community run event for the community and we are asking people to jump on board and be apart of this celebration around sustainability.”
