Onlookers at Port Macquarie’s popular Shelly Beach were shocked when a man driving a silver Suburu launched his car on to the sand and into the water.
The incident was captured on video by bystanders where it shows the driver entering the water submerging the car to door height, driving around in circles before returning to the sand.
Watch the video by James Godfrey:
Inspector Mick Aldridge of Mid North Coast Police District said police were called to the beach where they spoke to the 39-year-old Port Macquarie driver. The car was left in the carpark unable to be started.
“The man provided an excuse to police that he just wanted to wash his tyres,” Inspector Aldridge said.
The man was breath tested on-site and returned a clean reading.
Inspector Aldridge said inquiries into the incident are continuing and the man will likely face charges including infringements under the Recreational Vehicle Act and Local Government Act.
