The three metre-wide pedestrian and cycle path is among the key features of improvement work at the popular foreshore space.
The foreshore path is open, while work continues on turfing, landscaping and a path to The Westport Club.
Completion of the upgrade project is expected in one or two weeks, weather permitting.
Port Macquarie resident Frances Palmer took her dog Rusty, a Cavalier King Charles, for a walk along the new path on October 23.
She said the new path was lovely.
“It’s wider for prams, for dogs and people that ride their bikes and runners,” she said.
“We have more room to get past.”
Mrs Palmer would like to see features such as those at Townsville’s foreshore promenade, The Strand, at some point along the Port Macquarie foreshore with water play areas for children.
Bob Sanders and his wife Nelita walked the new path for the first time on October 23 with their dog Rolly.
Mr Sanders said the path, which was really good, would also benefit people with scooters and those riding their bikes.
The path would not bring in any more tourists, he said, but tourists would enjoy the space more.
The upgrade project delivers wider shared pathways, new lighting, seats, shade trees, bubblers and bike racks, and upgrades to car parking, stormwater services and the foreshore rock wall.
The council allocated $556,000 to fund the Westport Park upgrade in the 2018/19 Operational Plan with an additional $240,000 contributed under the NSW Government’s Restart NSW program.
The Westport Park improvements represent the first step to deliver a coastal walk vision.
The Coastal Walk Master Plan aims to provide a world-class walking track to showcase the coastline from Westport Park to Tacking Point Lighthouse.
