Many a champion has been raised on the water of Telegraph Point’s man-made lake – a facility that is world class and one that owner Jason Stone is very proud of.
“We’re the main place everyone comes to take it to the next level. We’re proud of that,” he said.
“People are following the performances of these champions and finding out they train here, which is great.
“From junior skiing to veterans, 17 of the age divisions are held here, so we’re the main site to break a world record.
“Kurtis competed here a few weeks ago and he skiied a personal best of two on the 11 metre line, which is right up there with the best in the open men’s division.”
Beare’s dedication sees him travel to Stoney Park from Sydney every weekend to train, as well as coach others in his downtime.
He has been training with Stone since he was 12 years old and has represented his country at many events, as have the likes of other national team members like Archie Davis and Sadie Ferguson for example.
“Archie is the current open men’s overall champion and he’s here working and training each weekend as well,” Stone said.
Davis is coming off a US season and will move to the area soon to coach and train.
Ferguson was on the same junior Australian team as Kurtis, winning the junior jump, and will join Davis.
Beare said the hard work and dedication to the sport is all worth it to represent his country.
“It’s hard with uni work and things like that, but my skiing has performed out of site,” he said.
“I’ve skiied for Australia five or six times now, which is an achievement I’m proud of. Jason has been unbelievable for my skiing, as have all the people here. They help me progress and shape my skiing.
“Stoney Park is a world class facility. I’ve skiied all over the world and this is one of, if not the, best.”
Beare will compete in several tournaments in the coming months before the nationals at the end of the year.
“I’m really focused at the moment,” he said. “I seem to be going where I want to go.”
