Professor Oppy said this talk with centre on the emergence of atheism in western culture.
"In the late seventeenth century, repeated public affirmation of atheism was a capital crime in Britain," he said.
"But, by 1770, British citizens were able to put their own names to pamphlets promoting atheism without fear of being put to death.
"What happened in the intervening period to bring about this change in attitudes?
"I will take a fairly wide, long-term perspective, examining important trends that emerged as early as the beginning of the second millennium.
"One important question that I will consider is whether there is anything particular new about the "new atheism" (exemplified in the work of Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, Hitchens, and others)," he said.
The Port Macquarie Philosophy Forum is on Sunday October 21, Port City Bowling Club, 6pm until 7.30pm.
