The state government put in $5 million; the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council $3.6 million, and I was pleased to convince the federal government to contribute $1.25 million.
The combined effort will lead to a much more pleasant and efficient experience for visitors and residents. Good airport services are a hallmark of a successful regional centre.
Tourism is obviously a major element of our local economy and when Australians are on holidays, or people from overseas visit our region, all elements of travel are part of the experience and influence what they say and think about us.
A good, or bad, experience in relation to air travel can be a significant influence on whether they would recommend us, or come back, so the quality of services at airports is definitely in play for a tourism city like ours. Efficient air services are also important in facilitating business travel.
The works include expansion of areas for check-in, departures, arrivals and security screening. There will be a baggage carousel, and expanded areas for passengers and visitors as they wait for flights in an air-conditioned terminal.
Work should be completed by the end of next year and while there will be some inconvenience in the meantime, the benefits will be significant.
