Do you know a student who wants to build self confidence and public speaking skills? Well now is their chance with Tacking Point Lion’s Club 2018 Youth of the Year competition.
The competition is opened to students and young people aged 16-19, and local Youth of the Year chair Mal Murray said it was a great chance to students to try something different.
“This time of year is a very busy time for students all over the place but it is also a time where they are thinking about what their future holds and how they can get there,” Mr Murray said.
“The Youth of the Year competition is an opportunity for high school students or young people just out of school to hone their public speaking skills while building self-confidence.
“A large part of the Youth of the Year competition is also about working with the students to develop their whole character so there are mentors on hand to assist students through the whole process – from application, through preparation and then to end whether that be at a local level or whether they progress to zone and state levels.”
Mr Murray said he is encouraging young people to give the competition a go because you never know what might come from it.
“I strongly believe this competition is a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop or strengthen their public speaking skills as well as giving back to the community and reflecting on what they want to do in the future,” he said.
“The young people who take up the challenge grow immensely and it is wonderful to see the changes they go through during the different stages.
“Last year we had an extremely strong field and it was a credit to all the schools who had students participating.
“Hopefully we get a number of nominations as it really is a great program for high school students to take part in.”
Applications for the competition are currently open with part one of judging on November 18 and part two on November 21.
