Lyne MP Dr David Gillespie says the Federal Coalition Government’s $1.5-million funding injection into the $3-million redevelopment of the facility has been worth it.
“We now have a facility that is able to cater for a broader number of events and people throughout the year,” he said.
The multi-million dollar project has included the refurbishment of the existing 50 metre pool, installation of heating and construction of a tiered grandstand and children’s outdoor water play area. The council also contributed $1.5-million.
Mayor Peta Pinson said the upgrades to the pool are a great addition to Wauchope’s sport and recreation facilities.
“A huge congratulations must go to all those who played a role in this exciting project,” she said.
“We’ve been working in close partnership with our local swimming community, and can now proudly say we have a high-quality, accessible pool that is sure to be extremely popular with a variety of people in the community, as well as sporting groups.”
Dr Gillespie congratulated the Wauchope Pool Committee and the various local organisations involved in the project.
“This has been a long road for many who have been pushing for the upgrade and I’m delighted our government has been able to play a role in seeing this project become a reality,” he said.
The project received funding under the Federal Coalition Government’s Community Development Grants program.
Among the visitors were George and Bev Fowler and Bob and Leonie Clark who were at the opening of the Wauchope pool 60 years ago in 1958. Long-time pool campaigner, Di Gilbert, was also there.
“It’s a big improvement and very appealing and user-friendly,” she said.
Mum Leone Boyton and kids Addison and Carter were loving it.
“We have actually got a pool at home, but they love coming here. It doesn’t cost a lot, and because it’s local, they get to see their friends,” she said.
