Parents and family members, as well as past and present students and staff, gathered for the occasion.
Huntingdon Public School principal Peta Harris said it was exciting to celebrate the school’s 150-year anniversary.
“This is one of the oldest schools in this area with lots of rich history,” she said.
“It has always been a school that has prided itself on very large community involvement and it’s nice to see 150 years on that is still the case.”
The school, located on the Oxley Highway west of Wauchope, welcomed its first students in 1868.
Today there are just over 50 students and eight staff.
The September 22 open day included a barbecue, face painting, morning tea, memorabilia displays, school tours, official ceremony and cake cutting.
A time capsule was also unearthed.
John Goodger was the principal from 1958 to 1959. Back then the school had one building and a pit toilet.
“My memory is very fond of the place and the people,” he said.
Gunnar Fuhrmann was the principal from 1990 to 2017.
He said it was lovely to look back on the school’s achievements and the people that made a small rural school so special.
