The Community Hair Project is coming to town in November and is asking for barbers and hairdressers to donate up to two hours of their time to help those who are struggling.
The project is the brain child of Christina Mastello who saw a need in her community on the Central Coast and sought to take the project Australia wide.
“The Community Hair Project is all about restoring self-esteem to those who are living on the streets or currently in hard situations – one hair cut at a time,” Ms Mastello said.
“Usually we have people come to us who are homeless or leaving domestic violent situations but other times we help those in poverty.
“We are so proud that something as simple as a hair cut and a judgement free chat can help someone.”
The project which started 15 months ago has hairdressers and barbers in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia and are heading to Port Macquarie on November 21.
“We are wanting to expand through the Mid North Coast focusing on Port Macquarie and Kempsey and would love for some local hairdressers to come along and help us,” she said.
“When we sit down and talk to these people we find out about their fascinating lives and it brings as much joy to them as it does to us.
“They are people and we are people and together we help each other bring joy to the community.”
When the group are in Port Macquarie they will be operating at the Port Macquarie Anglican Soup Kitchen and would love hairdressers to get in touch.
