We are currently going through that windy part of the year, with southerlies one day, and nor’ easters the next. Not ideal angling conditions, especially for those wishing to head offshore, although the forecast for this weekend looks surprisingly calm. Let’s hope this indeed eventuates.

In the estuary, flathead numbers are terrific, with plenty of fish right throughout the Hastings from Wauchope right down to the breakwalls. Those throwing lures continue to enjoy the best of the action, however a lightly weighted whitebait will also score plenty of fish. Lake Cathie has also been producing plenty of nice lizards, particularly from around the Perch Hole area.
Whiting numbers have been improving with encouraging reports from around Blackmans Point, Limeburners and of course Lake Cathie. On the subject of the lake, while the entrance is still hanging in, closure would appear somewhat imminent with either a decent sea or more nor’ easters likely to signal its demise.
On the blackfish front, catches remain a little on the inconsistent side, with the odd few fish about one day, and little the next, although there have been plenty of fish sighted throughout the lower estuary. Crab reports however have been excellent with both blue swimmers and muddies active in the Hastings.
Off the rocks, there is still the odd drummer about with the occasional fish to around 3 kilos. Might still be worth prospecting with either cunjevoi or peeled prawns. Tailor numbers remain reasonable from most headlands, however the larger greenbacks seen a few weeks ago appear to have largely moved on. For those keen on chasing a few bream, best bet would to head to Crescent Head, with fresh tailor strips well worth throwing either early mornings or after dark.
On the beaches, there have been some solid late season bream about with Lighthouse in particular well worth a look. Best results have been after dark on worms and pipis. On the tailor front, results have only been average with the better action from around North Haven and Dunbogan. The entrance of lake Cathie has also produced a few nice whiting.
Offshore, there are still good numbers of snapper in close as has been the case during most of this winter season. Access however has been the major obstacle of late with the winds up early on most days. Hopefully this weekend will see a window of opportunity for those keen to head out. Apart from snapper, the wider reefs off Plomer have held pearl perch, teraglin and a few solid kingfish, while the flathead grounds have been quite reliable for those simply seeking a quality feed.
