There is no better place to do this than at Lake Cathie.
Just a 10-minute drive from Port Macquarie, Lake Cathie is a small friendly place nestled around a beautiful lakeside tidal lagoon and sandy beach.
If you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids during the upcoming school holidays, the calm waters of the lake are great for shallow wading.
Last year’s improvements to the Ghost Road are well and truly over, so getting to Lake Cathie from the Pacific Highway is a breeze.
There are great beaches for fishing, surfing or walking a dog. The reserve is a super picnic spot and the kids will love playing on the play equipment here for sure.
Ever wanted to try paddle-boarding? The lake is the perfect place to try.
The place is famous of course, due to its lakeside setting, but there is so much more than just the lake to enjoy.
There is also boutique-style shopping, a tavern, a bowling club, bakery, coffee shops, a post office and hair and beauty salon.
The local shopping complex is fully stocked, and it is easy to park everywhere.
Perhaps why some residents from Lighthouse Beach and King Creek are known to prefer shopping (and having their hair done) here instead of heading into busier Port Macquarie.
Lake Cathie is a great spot to get away from the hustle and bustle, there are lots of great cafes to enjoy, as well as beautiful walks and the picnic spots are just perfect.

You don’t have to travel here just by car. The walk from Bonny Hills to Lake Cathie along the beach is shorter than you may think, and certainly very picturesque.
For cycling enthusiasts, the ride from Port Macquarie is very enjoyable.
Australia Day celebrations are legendary here, the spectacle of the tinny races is one not to miss.
With so much on offer, it is no wonder Lake Cathie is becoming a property hotspot. The public primary school is a magnet for young families as well as the lure of building your own home within walking distance to the beach.
New to the area? Don’t be caught out with the pronunciation. It’s pronounced Lake Cat-eye.
