Residents Carl Lockwood and Brian Langley organised fundraising in the Garden Village community to help farming families in need.

Residents, their families and staff raised $1186.

“People just gave what they could afford,” Mr Langley said.

Garden Village matched the fundraising amount which brought the total to $2372.

Garden Village has presented the funds to Port Macquarie Lions Club.

The money will be distributed through Lions, with the help of the Salvation Army, to farming families in need in the Lions district, which extends west to Moree.

Garden Village chief executive officer Craig Wearne said Garden Village had a strong vision of supporting communities which formed part of the organisation’s vision.

“We saw this as a good opportunity to show that and back our residents and their aspirations to support this very important matter and matched the terrific fundraising done by our community,” he said.

Port Macquarie Lions Club president Ian Turner said the money would help with essentials such as food, medical costs and electricity bills.

“By doing that, it means the money is spent in the [drought-affected] communities,” Mr Turner said.

“The Lions clubs feel that is the best way to help those communities as well.”

Port Macquarie Lions Club has donated $1000 to the appeal and accepted a $950 donation from the Catholic Men’s Club Friday afternoon golfers at the Emerald Downs Golf Course.

Meanwhile, the Tacking Point Lions Club is supporting the Lions drought appeal through a Father’s Day fundraising raffle.

Club members are selling tickets at various locations around Port Macquarie.
