Port Macquarie Basketball Association stepped up to drive the funding application process on behalf of stadium user groups.

IFMG administration officer Rachel Stephan emphasised the importance of having a defibrillator at the indoor stadium.

She said up to 3000 patrons a week used the facility.

Port Macquarie Basketball Association director Mark Newman said it was important to have a defibrillator at the stadium given its expansion and the increasing number of community groups using the facility.

Port Macquarie Basketball Association president Jason Berry was supportive of the project from the outset.

Representatives recently attended the defibrillator handover and training session.

Adam Lawes conducted the training on behalf of The Defib Shop.

Mr Lawes is also the president of the Student Heart Project.

A quick response is vital in the event of sudden cardiac arrest.

“Having that defibrillator gets that quick response for saving a life,” Mr Lawes said.

The Student Heart Project has placed about 15 defibrillators in the community.

The initiative raises funds for defibrillators with the aim to make Port Macquarie and surrounding areas heart safe communities.

Charles Sturt University Port Macquarie Campus paramedic students are behind the Student Heart Project.

The group is preparing for the 2018 Red and Blue Ball at Panthers Port Macquarie from 6.30pm on September 7.
