The volunteer emergency service organisation is holding an information night on August 8 and is encouraging community minded people to come along and see if it is for them.
Elaine Mason, member service officer for the unit said the group are like a family who want to help.
“We are looking for new volunteers and calling on those who might be interested in joining us to come along and see what we are all about,” Ms Mason said.
“The information night will be chance for people to go behind the scenes of what we do and ask any specific questions about volunteering they may have.
“On the night we will also take them on a tour of our headquarters on Central Road and they will see some of our volunteers training to get a taste of what we are all about.”
Ms Mason said when considering volunteering for something like the SES there are no formal qualifications needed.
“We are looking for all kinds of people to join and don’t worry if you have no prior training, we put all our recruits through the same training and talk them through everything they need to know,” she said.
“Over the last few years more women have joined us which is great and you can sign up as a volunteer from the age of 16.
“All you need is a passion for helping others and a commitment to the community.”
Though tasked with helping people in floods and storms, the Port Macquarie SES unit also help in rescue situations.
“As well as attending flood and storm calls we do also help in rescue situations so we are a busy unit that is always training to improve our skills.”
