In the Lower North Coast final, the Port Macquarie school were left to rue missed opportunities as they went down 2-1 to Great Lakes College from Forster.
They created chance after chance especially in the second half, but it was Great Lakes College who found the back of the net with 10 minutes to go to give themselves the lead.
With the aid of a howling breeze at their backs in the first half, St Joseph’s took the lead after little more than 10 minutes when Riley Stone found the back of the net.
Disappointed St Joseph’s coach Michael Morson admitted the difference between the two teams was taking their chances.
St Joseph’s didn’t take theirs while Great Lakes did.
“We were all over them, we just couldn’t score,” he said.
“We had about eight easy chances in the second half and they might have had one chance and scored probably about 10 minutes from full-time.
“We didn’t put our chances away and it cost us the game.”
Morson said his team didn’t utilise the breeze to their advantage in the first half.
“We didn’t use the wind as much as we’d like in the first half and then it wasn’t as strong in the second half, but the girls played some good football in the second half,” he said.
The coach was confident his team would be stronger next year with up to half the side made up of year seven students.
“When you pick a squad you make sure you pick a few year sevens so you keep the team flow throughout the years,” he said.
“Otherwise you’re back to square one every year and you can’t really afford to do that.
“We had a couple of them who stood up and they’ll be better for it next year.
“I can’t fault their effort; they tried pretty hard, it just wasn’t to be.”
