A report to the June 20 Port Macquarie-Hastings Council meeting deals with the off-leash dog park issue.
The report said analysis had determined that Stuart Park was a more appropriate site for an off-leash dog park than The Boom Reserve.
Stuart Park sporting precinct was currently used for dog training and obedience classes and there were existing public amenities and car parks, the report said.
A three-part recommendation is on the council meeting agenda.
If approved, Stuart Park would become the preferred location for Port Macquarie’s dog off-leash park.
The council put the concept for an off-leash dog park at The Boom Reserve on hold in March pending further investigation on whether the proposal could provide for off-street parking.
The council also resolved to investigate whether there were more suitable alternatives for an off-leash dog park in Port Macquarie.
Those investigations have been done.
The council report said investigations determined that options for off-street parking to support the development of a dog off-leash park at The Boom Reserve were not ideal and would be unlikely to prevent facility users from taking up on-street parking opportunities unless a larger car park area was constructed within the central section of the reserve.
A larger car park in the central section of the reserve is not supported by staff given the impact it would have on broader recreational use of the reserve.
A group of nearby residents oppose an off-leash dog park at The Boom Reserve.
Meanwhile, Stuart Park came out on top of the list after consideration of potential sites against selection criteria.
Other items on the council meeting agenda include the Kendall Main Street Master Plan, an ArtWalk 2018 post-event report, Port Macquarie-Hastings Urban Growth Management Strategy 2017-2036 and the integrated planning and reporting documents.
The meeting begins at 5.30pm in the Burrawan Street council chambers.
