In pumping four-foot swell, Enfield came up with the right result in the final at the North Coast Combined High Schools event.
The 14-year-old from Hastings Secondary College held on to defeat Woolgoolga’s Riley Schmidt in the final of the under-16 boys division at Flagstaff on Friday.
Organiser Chris Fitzpatrick admitted it was a surprise.
“Riley only probably got one good wave in the final after he was ripping it up all day,” he said.
“Kayle is only in year eight whereas Riley is in year 10, so he’s going to be in the same division for the next couple of years.”
In further good news for the Hastings region, Camden Haven’s Jenna Cutting took out the under-19 girls division ahead of Helelia Phillips from Coffs Harbour.
Chelsea and Lucy Green took out the team’s event.
“It was a great day because everyone got an opportunity,” Fitzpatrick said.
“The wind went onshore a bit later in the day.”
The state finals will be held at Coffs Harbour in a fortnight.
