The June long weekend is traditionally a great time for angling in this part of the world, with both recreational anglers and those into club competitions eagerly awaiting this three day break.

This is the time of year when beach and rock angling in particular is nearing its peak, with pretty well all species on offer. Unfortunately, the weather is not that promising again this weekend.
In the estuaries, now is bream time with terrific results seen over the past week despite difficult conditions. The breakwalls and Limeburners have fished well particularly after dark, with yabbies mullet strips and gut baits all worth throwing.
During the day, soft vibes fished in the deeper holes has been a most productive tactic. Flathead action also remains excellent with good fish coming from most parts of the Hastings. Soft vibes and hard bodied lures have both achieved good results, as have whitebait and prawns.
Blackfish numbers and quality are slowly improving, with the recent big seas hopefully the catalyst for a consistent run over the coming weeks. In general, a big sea at this time of year only benefits our estuary blackfish scene, so hopefully this will again prove the case.
Further upstream, still a few good muddies around for the keen crabbers, and by all reports, the crabs are in top condition.
On the beaches, the big seas have seen only limited access over the past week with the protected southern corners being the only real option.
As such, tailor and mulloway action has largely been on hold, however some top bream to over a kilo have been on offer together with a few solid late season whiting.
Once conditions settle and formations begin to redevelop, all beaches should be well worth prospecting.
Off the rocks, drummer numbers continue to slowly improve with the ledges to the south producing the better results to date.
Quite often the first big blow and sea of the year kick starts the drummer season and hopefully this will again prove the case this year.
Locally, Shelley’s and Miners have been worth a look, although Lighthouse generally produces well early in the season.
Tailor numbers remain solid with Point Plomer and surrounds producing some better quality greenbacks, along with a few nice bream from the protected north facing ledges.
On the offshore scene, little to report as you would expect given the conditions over the past week.
If conditions settle, no doubt there will be plenty keen to get the last of the mackerel action for the season, alternately some of the great snapper now starting to show up.
